First Day Trainings

First Day Trainings

Preparing you for work at the Y!

Safety is our main priority - especially the safety of the children in our care. That’s why all new employees are asked to complete the following trainings as soon as possible – and every employee refreshes these trainings every year - so keep track of any logins and passwords.

All staff, even those who don’t work directly with kids, have a responsibility to know our child abuse policies and procedures.

Let’s start with Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), Anti-harassment and Bloodborne Pathogens trainings:

To complete these classes, you will need to create an account with Great Academy. These trainings have to be done every year so make sure to keep a copy of your log-in and password.

The two main trainings are: Child Abuse Prevention - called ‘Keeping Your Y Safe’ and an Anti-Harassment training called ‘Promoting a safe Environment, Employee Sexual Harassment Training’.

Here are the instructions on how to create your account - or access your current account with Great Academy:

If you are one of our wonderful volunteers - you will require an alternative class. See the instructions below:

Safety Checklist:

If you have been given a tour of your work area by either your supervisor, or another Y staff person, you can begin working on the Safety Checklist. (Link below)

If you are trying to complete this training before you have had a tour there will be several questions that you will not know the answers to, so it would be best to skip over it for now and move on to other trainings. You can return to complete the Safety Checklist after your tour.

Abuse Prevention Acknowledgement:

Continuing with our theme of keeping everyone safe, staff & members, especially children, you are now going to be asked to complete a form that outlines what kinds of interactions are allowed in the YMCA of Snohomish County. You are strongly encouraged to take your time when reading and answering this form. It contains information on such things as no babysitting members and the right way to give praise to a child. This document keeps you safe as well as our members.

New Employee Orientation:

As a new employee you often have questions about your role, the goals of the Y and what you can expect from us. I’m sure you have many other questions too!

We have covered most of your questions, along with some information on Snohomish County YMCA - who we are and where we’re going - in this, the first part of a two-part recorded training.

Take the time to watch the following video, then if you are fulltime staff, two weeks later, and if you are part time staff, about 3 weeks later, you should return and complete the second half of the NEO by watching the next video.

Both videos are below, just make sure you are watching the correct one (full time or part time) so that you get the information you need.

This second training will give you additional information regarding your role here at The Y. .

After watching this first video, you will need to complete a short knowledge quiz. This quiz also acts as a record of your completion, so make sure not to skip this step. The link to this quiz is below:

Basic life support (CPR), first aid and EUMO:

Almost all of the staff here at Snoco Y are fully certified in BLS (a high level of CPR training) and first aid. Some staff also require training on oxygen and its uses. We use the nationally recognized Health and Safety Institute (HSI) to certify our staff.

After you have completed today’s trainings, your supervisor can assist you in registering for an in-person skills verification class. Once you have registered for the in-person part of the training, you will be sent online learning links that will need to be completed BEFORE you can attend. The online work can take as much as 4-5 hours depending on the certification you need for your role; however, it is modular and can be taken in small portions, so you don’t have to do it all in one go.

It is your goal to complete this certification within the next 30 days.

Incident reporting:

We recognize you have had a lot of training today - and we want to thank you for understanding how important they are - ensuring the safety of our staff and members. We have just one more, and that is Incident Reporting.

If someone is injured, suffers a medical emergency, exhibits bad behavior etc., it must be reported. Below is a pdf of a PowerPoint showing the step-by-step process of using the App we use for reporting:

And here are some FAQ’s on when and how to make the report:
