Membership

Connect neighbors and inspire change by fostering a welcoming environment.

Our Membership Engagement staff are at the center of everything we do at the Y. From helping families register for Summer Camp to fixing a stuck locker, every interaction brings something new in Membership.

Every interaction is also an opportunity for you to make a positive impact. Time and time again we hear from our community members that your smile and warm welcome means so much to them- and for many- it’s the best part of their day.

Never underestimate your power.

Our Membership Principles

We want our community to have unforgettable experiences at the Y. That starts with you! Take a moment to reflect on our membership principles (below). Think about what you would do to create an environment that reflects these principles.

Positive Attitude😊

Your positivity is so important to our goal of creating impactful experiences for our community. For many of our members, speaking with you might be the first or only interaction they have in a day. When so many in our community are facing isolation and stress, we get to be a haven.

We get to be our community’s third place- where families connect, neighbors become friends, and youth are transformed. It’s our job to recognize and step into this power we have to serve our community. Approach every interaction with positivity and excitement for the work we get to do every day.

Here’s how positivity shows up in our work:

  • Remind yourself of the importance of your role
  • Take time to destress and get excited before your shift
  • Make plans to step away when you need to (we’ve all been there)!
  • Stay connected to our mission and engaged with other departments
  • Build trust (and listen first) with your colleagues - we all lean on each other
  • Smile, make eye contact, and let no member go unwelcomed
  • In hard moments, remember that we never know what others are going through

Professional Quality📝

Did you know that the Y is one of the largest nonprofits IN THE WORLD? The collective power of the Y movement is unmatched and has impacted hundreds of millions of people around the globe. We are part of something special and incredibly important, and the way we show up should reflects this. We are a big deal.

Here’s how professional quality shows up in our work:

  • Be sure your space is tidy and inviting
  • Wear appropriate Y gear and nametags
  • Be knowledgeful about our Y
  • Be friendly, focused, and attentive

People-First Approach🌍

No two stories are the same. Being a people-first organization means that we grant those we serve and those we work with our full respect, attention, and sincere care. Our work is bigger than membership or training hubs or apps- what we do is about people. We serve people from cradle through every stage of life. Being people-first should be second nature for us.

Here’s how being people-first shows up in our work:

  • Be intentional about connecting with those we serve
  • Take time to ask questions and be a good listener
  • Understand everyone has good days and bad days

Passion❤️‍🔥

The next time you’re at the Y, look around. You will see incredibly passionate people who believe deeply in what the YMCA can accomplish for our community. Our staff and volunteers are changemakers who choose to spend their days serving others. We don’t work here because it’s easy- we work here because we know that it matters. We know that the world gets better when more of our neighbors experience achievement, belonging, and friendship.

As you complete these Membership trainings, ask yourself how your passion will fuel your work? How does that passion show up when you give a tour? Or greet a member? Or support others on your team? This is your moment to transform your passion into power. Power to change Snohomish County for the better.
